Centrelink News for Seniors (Issue 86 2011) is Available

I received my copy today of News for Seniors from Centrelink.

Beyond being impressed by how good Noelene Brown is looking on the cover for a lady in her 70′s, I found that there were a few interesting articles that were worth a read by retirees:

  • Retire from work, but not life
  • Support for self-funded retirees
  • Support for senior Australians receiving a pension

If you don’t already receive this publication from Centrelink, it is published 3 times a year and is always available on the Centrelink website.

Do you know anybody who might benefit from receiving Pacesetter updates about issues relevant to retirees and general information about the ENJOY phase of their life.   Do you know somebody who might benefit from the financial advice that Pacesetter provides, whether they be interested in PROTECT, PLAN or ENJOY strategies and advice?   If you do, then contact us to let us know their email address and we can send them an invitation to learn more about Pacesetter and our services.

Can we help somebody you know?

Do you know that being referred by a friend or colleague is the most popular way to find a new financial adviser?

“Who do I trust?” is the major question in the financial services industry. Yet advertising, the internet and the Yellow Pages fail to answer this question. Only a referral provides this critical information when your friends, family or colleagues are seeking a financial adviser of their own. This is why referrals are so important in this industry – particularly in times of volatile markets and uncertain economic conditions.

Maybe you know people who…

Might need a helping hand?

  • Don’t have any or enough risk insurance but have responsibilities and/or children to think of
  • Too busy to deal with finances themselves
  • Not “financially savvy” and would appreciate some education
  • Have asked you about your investment activities
  • Are looking to start investing, but unsure where to begin
  • Talks about “getting into the market” but always too busy

Are seeking a new adviser?

  • Might be upset or distressed by market downturn
  • Have complained about bad previous financial advice
  • Complains current financial adviser has “gone missing”
  • Says they are unsure about the market and what to do next
  • Mentioned unhappiness with current financial advice

Have a specific issue to address?

  • Recent promotion or career change
  • Recently received an inheritance or redundancy payment
  • Are about to sell an investment property
  • Undergoing family changes – marriage, divorce, children
  • Recently started – or sold – a business

Are talking about retirement?

  • “Empty nesters” with adult children
  • Talks about having to work longer or retire later
  • Have mentioned “having to cut back” in retirement
  • Talks about helping their kids get established
  • Are thinking about a “sea change”

Do these profiles

remind you of any

of your friends,

family or

colleagues?

If they do, let us know and we can send more information to the person you thought of to help them get their “financial house in order”

Client Story: Phil

“I never thought I’d be in this position of being financially secure.  Mal’s advice has been impeccable.”

Phil has for many years been a self employed company director and lives at Bridgeman Downs on the north side of Brisbane.  Now in his late 50′s, Phil is semi-retired and his adviser at Pacesetter is Malcolm Jensen.

He receives PROTECT, PLAN and ENJOY strategy advice and has been a client of Pacesetter since 1990.

Phil’s Story

When and why did you seek financial advice?

My wife and I initially dealt with John Noonan at Pacesetter regarding our insurance and superannuation requirements.

In 2002 John referred us to Malcolm Jensen for more tailored advice in relation to wealth creation strategies.

What are the strategies that Pacesetter has advised you on?

Since 2002 Malcolm has advised and implemented a range of strategies to meet our needs, including superannuation, investments, retirement planning and estate planning.

In addition, over the years, Mal has also advised us on personal and business insurances appropriate to our needs. He has given tailored financial advice on a range of issues, both of a personal and business nature.

I have also sought insurance advice for my children, as I see insurance as an important part of one’s financial security, especially after the passing of my wife.

Mal and his team also provided invaluable assistance to me after my wife passed away, which included the administration by them of all the insurance claims for the cover that was in place for Leonie.

What has getting financial advice from Pacesetter meant to you?

Since working with Mal, I have gained financial independence and peace of mind. One of the attractions for me is that Mal has explained things in layman’s terms.  He takes away the technical talk and simplifies the issues.

Would you recommend that other people seek financial advice and would you recommend Pacesetter?

As a result of the services that Mal has provided, I am now in a position in my life where I am comfortable with my financial matters. I never thought I’d be in this position of being financially secure. Mal’s advice has been impeccable.  I look upon the people at Pacesetter as being part of the family and I trust Pacesetter with my financial affairs. We are very open with each other.

What are Pacesetter doing for Movember to Support Men’s Health?

Like our breast cancer initiative to the end of 2012, Pacesetter want to support men’s health and the worthy cause that is Movember.

As financial advisers, we can help to increase awareness of men’s health issues but talking to our male clients about serious illness and the financial impact it can have upon their lives.

We can also help our clients to ensure that they are financially prepared should they suffer a serious illness or injury.

You can help us to support Movember.

Please tell men you know that its important to be financially prepared if they get sick.  Nobody knows what is around the corner…

If you are sick, you may be unable to work for a long period of time.

If you are sick, you may be unable to earn your income.

If you are sick, you may need long term medical treatment.

To financially help the cause, we will donate $100 to the Movember initiative between now and December 31, if our clients and contacts refer somebody to us and they become a client of Pacesetter.

Our advisers know first hand the serious impact an unexpected illness can have.   We have clients who have unfortunately suffered a serious illness or injury but have been able to maintain their financial well being through their income protection insurance, trauma insurance or total and permanent disablement insurance.

You can read more articles about insurance claims, including some of the stories of our clients who have successfully claimed against their insurances to maintain their financial well being.

Funds donated to Movember are used to support programs undertaken by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and to the National Depression Initiatives of BeyondBlue.

If you’d like to speak to an adviser about PROTECT strategies, you can contact us.

Client Story: Geoff and Paula

“With three children at varying stages of education, plus moving from being employed to being self employed, brought into play for us new risks and challenges. Mal’s experience in analysing these new risks and putting in place appropriate measures to protect myself and my family was invaluable.”

Geoff is married to Paula, they are in their 50′s and together have 3 children (the youngest still at school). Geoff is self employed and Paula works part time. They have been receiving PROTECT and PLAN strategy advice from Pacesetter for about 10 years. Their adviser at Pacesetter is Malcolm Jensen. Geoff shared his thoughts with us.

Geoff’s Story

When and why did you seek financial advice?

I left one of the major banks almost 10 years ago after 28 years service and at that time I had an important decision to make – to whom I was going to entrust my superannuation. I had several options, including the major bank I had been with, however I decided to place my trust in Mal Jensen. There were two main reasons that influenced my decision. Firstly my wife Paula & I had known Mal for several years (as we are members of the same local church) and I knew Mal was very personable and highly regarded by others. Secondly, in my role as a Business Banking Executive, I managed numerous high quality business people and several of these people also enjoyed a long term relationship with Mal. He was held in very high regard both personally and professionally by them.

What has getting financial advice from Pacesetter meant to you?

With three children at varying stages of education, plus moving from being employed to being self employed, brought into play for us new risks and challenges. Mal’s experience in analysing these new risks and putting in place appropriate measures to protect myself and my family was invaluable.

Initially I was not able to secure income protection insurance, however Mal has continually reviewed my situation with the insurers until eventually I was able to obtain appropriate cover.

Whilst Paula and myself have been responsible for asset accumulation outside of the superannuation environment, regular reviews conducted by Mal have ensured that those assets are protected should an unforeseen event occur and the peace of mind this provides cannot be overstated.

As we are both approaching retirement within the next 5 to 10 years, we have already had several discussions regarding the most suitable strategy going forward and I can see that the value we receive from our relationship with Mal and his team will only increase as we approach this next phase.

Would you recommend that other people seek financial advice and would you recommend Pacesetter?

It’s no secret that the past few years have not been kind to superannuation investments, and whilst my own industry experience arms me with a good level of understanding, the personal one on one reviews conducted by Mal have provided comfort to both myself and Paula that we are still on the right track.

I have no hesitation in recommending Mal and his team at Pacesetter and the feedback I receive from those I have referred to Pacesetter is very positive.

Client Story: Marty and His Family

“I turned thirty in 2010 and we have a thriving office supplies business on the Tweed Coast that now employs eight staff. At this time in life, I am loving being a father of a young growing family, I immerse myself in the excitement of the business and its growth and I am confident that my financial planning will support my lifestyle when I choose to retire.”

Marty is 30 and lives on the Tweed Coast with his wife Renee, his lovely daughter Ava and new baby daughter Lillian. Marty is the owner of a succcessful office supplies business based on the Tweed and has been receiving PROTECT and PLAN strategy advice from Pacesetter since 2002. Their adviser at Pacesetter is Malcolm Jensen.

Marty’s Story

When and why did you seek financial advice?

Mal was recommended to me by my parents in 2002 when I was 22 and I haven’t looked back. From an even earlier age, when I first started investing in managed funds in 1995, I started with the juvenile financial goal of being a millionaire by 30, which then developed into a more mature goal of having the ability to retire by 40 if I wanted.

What are the strategies that Pacesetter has advised you on?

When I first talked to Mal, I really was only interested in investment planning. We explored different high growth strategies and dabbled in different investment vehicles. Moving forward, Mal and his team made me realise the importance of protection through insurance for both life and income, which I commenced. I first met my future wife in 2005 and she had no previous exposure to investing. Soon after the first date, she was talking to Mal and away she was went on building her own portfolio. Between then and the time we got married in 2007, Mal had helped her build a sizeable portfolio which basically went unnoticed as contributions were going in monthly. Our two little girls have also commenced their own investment portfolios care of their parents, creating a good foothold and learning tool for them realising the benefits of investing. Fast forward to 2011 and we are looking at having our new family home purchased in 2009 completely paid outright by 2017. We can then look at superannuation strategies with Mal.

What has getting financial advice from Pacesetter meant to you?

My first goal mentioned above was achieved in time (when I turned 30) and with the way business has been growing, I think goal number 2 is quite achievable. This financial freedom will allow me to focus on the greater things in life, like my two little girls.

Would you recommend that other people seek financial advice and would you recommend Pacesetter?

I think I have recommended Mal and the team at Pacesetter so much that I should be on a commission plan! Their service is impeccable and professional and very customisable to your financial needs and goals. So stop thinking about it and go and have a chat to the team sooner rather than later!

I think I was “born old”, in that, back in 1995, my dad gave me $1000 that they had saved up since I was a child. He said I could do anything I wanted with it. Although the freedom of a first car sounded good, I got on my push bike the next week and pedalled down to a financial planner with the roll of 10 x $100 notes and said “invest it”! I guess that was the “turning point” in that I wanted to make sure my retirement was early and fruitful. So while my friends were driving around in the best looking Datsun 120Y that a 16 year old could afford, I was putting as much away as I could into an investment portfolio which was a result of dealing with my financial advisor at the time. The only negative is that I wished I saw a financial adviser 16 years earlier! This is the reason I have started my kid’s portfolio from basically the start of their lives.

Client Story: Alan & Di

“We enjoy a wonderful, relaxing lifestyle and have not felt any financial constraints, even through the recent GFC which hit just after I retired. We have plenty of time to travel, both overseas and around Australia in our A-Van which we purchased four years ago. Without all of the work and effort we and Pacesetter have put into this over the past 15+ years we would not have achieved this.”

Alan is 60 and Diane is 58. They live close to Brisbane, are both retired and are enjoying life to the max! They have been receiving PLAN and ENJOY strategy advice from Pacesetter for around 15 years. Their adviser at Pacesetter is Malcolm Jensen.

Alan & Di’s Story

When and why did you seek financial advice?

Not sure the exact year we met Mal at Pacesetter, I think it was about 15 years ago, although it seems like we have known Mal for much longer. Previous to working with Pacesetter we had another financial planner who had decided to re-join one of the big five banking houses. Our wish was to have a financial adviser that was independent and our Accountant recommended we speak to Mal at Pacesetter.

What are the strategies that Pacesetter has advised you on?

Probably everything except insurance. We have been involved in multiple investments in both direct shares and managed funds. Strategies have involved margin loans, shares versus property, superannuation strategies, estate planning, helping our children and lastly, but the most important things, flexibility and keeping an open mind.

What has getting financial advice from Pacesetter meant to you?

Our lifestyle is the positive benefit! I have been retired for 5 years, we enjoy a wonderful, relaxing lifestyle and have not felt any financial constraints, even through the recent GFC which hit just after I retired. We have plenty of time to travel, both overseas and around Australia in our A-Van which we purchased four years ago. We have heaps of time to help and support our ageing parents and the local community. We have the ability to help our children and enjoy time with them. Without all of the work and effort we and Pacesetter have put into this over the past 15+ years, we would not have achieved this.

Would you recommend that other people seek financial advice and would you recommend Pacesetter?

We believe that planning for your future financial independence is too complex to do on your own. You need expert advice to steer a path through the maze that is financial planning, especially with regard superannuation options. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Pacesetter Team to anyone seeking to plan for their financial future. In fact a number of relatives and friends have been to Pacesetter based on our encouragement. We hope it brings them what it has to us.
